With it’s opening in 2006 Mall of Sofia was one of the first modern shopping centres in Bulgaria. Mall of Sofia was the first major shopping centre construction project in the city of Sofia. The shopping centre was initially conceptualised and developed by Israeli companies Aviv Group and Cinema City International, a leading construction company in Israel and the largest cinema multiplex operator in Central Europe respectively. In 2006 Mall of Sofia was purchased by GE Real Estate and Quinlan Private (renamed in 2011 Avestus Real Estate).
In August 2011 Mall of Sofia was acquired by funds managed by Europa Capital, a member of Rockefeller Group International (RGI), a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. RGI is a strategic investor alongside management in Europa Capital's investment management business.
